Who We Are

Where did the name 'Stone Soup Group' come from?

Cheri, one of Stone Soup Group's founding members, with an old Soup Pot signPeople often ask how Stone Soup Group got its name. Perhaps you have read or heard the Stone Soup fable as a child: A hungry stranger arrives in a village where no one will share their hoarded food. Since everyone claimed to have nothing to eat, she tells the people that she can make soup out of only a stone, but it would taste better with a carrot or an onion. One by one, the villagers add a meat or a vegetable until there is enough soup to feed everyone.

This spirit of collaboration and sharing is the philosophy behind the work we do at Stone Soup Group.

What We Do

Stone Soup Group is a statewide non-profit agency based in Anchorage, Alaska that provides assistance and support to families of children with special needs. We operate several programs, each with a specific focus on different ways we can help families supporting children with special needs to become informed, experienced, self-sufficient advocates for their children and themselves.

There is no charge to families for Parent Navigation. Our agency is funded by state and federal grants, as well as donations from community partners and supporters.

Stone Soup Group is proud to be the nationally recognized, federally funded Family-to-Family Health & Information Center and Parent Training & Information Center for the state of Alaska.
