Welcome!

We're so glad you've found us. People often ask whether or not Stone Soup Group is a soup kitchen. Although we provide a wide array of assistance to families, we most definitely are not a food bank or soup kitchen.

The name originates from the children's fable:

A hungry stranger arrives in a village where no one will share their hoarded food. Since everyone claimed to have nothing to eat, she tells the people that she can make soup out of only a stone, but it would taste better with a carrot or an onion. One by one, the villagers add a meat or a vegetable until there is enough soup to feed everyone. This spirit of collaboration and sharing is the philosophy behind the work we do at Stone Soup Group.

What We Do

Stone Soup Group is a statewide non-profit agency based in Anchorage, Alaska that provides assistance and support to families of children with special health, disability, mental health, and/or special education needs. The goal is to help families supporting children with special needs to become informed, experienced, self-sufficient advocates for their children and themselves. Our main services include parent navigation, training, technical assistance for professionals and families, information & referral, and assistance with behavior challenges. We work with families of children statewide, from birth-26, who would like assistance with medical, disability, mental health, and special education issues.

SSG is proud to be the nationally recognized, federally funded Family-to-Family Health & Information Center and Parent Training & Information Center for the state of Alaska. We are the state affiliate organization for Family Voices (a national advocacy organization), the Epilepsy Foundation Northwest, TASH, National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (NOFAS), and a member of the National Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health.
