FASD Family Support Project
Family Network: Communicate with other families
Alaska FASD Parent Support Listserv
Families caring for individuals experiencing FASD are invited to join the Alaska FASD Parent Support listserv. This listserv was created in order to provide parents with a safe place to share their joys and frustrations, sorrows and triumphs, stories and support.
What is a listserv?
A listserv is an e-mail discussion group that permits you to:
- Network with other parents
- Seek advice or answers and get responses quickly
- Actively participate in discussions or simply monitor news or developments
- Stay involved with other families who may share your experiences
This is a closed listserv meaning that only members can send and receive messages. In this case, membership is open only to Alaskan parents and caregivers of children with prenatal alcohol exposure.
Some guidelines have been established to make this listserv as useful and convenient as possible for the members. Please read the following section. Before you sign up you must be willing to comply with the rules.
Email Listserv Guidelines
Subscribing and Unsubscribing
To participate or subscribe, follow these simple steps:
To join send e-mail to fasparent-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. You will receive an e-mail confirming that you want to join the group. Shortly after replying to that e-mail you will receive a message from our list administrator with a few questions to verify your eligibility to participate in this listserv. You will then receive an e-mail from us notifying you of your list membership status. If your membership has been approved you will begin receiving messages from the list and you can send messages to the list at this address: fasparent@yahoogroups.com.
Posting
Messages should be courteous and constructive and suitable for this list. Treat communications on this listserv as you would private conversations. Do not forward or reproduce a posted message without the author's permission.
Replying
Don't include the entire length of the original message in your post. Take time to use your delete key and select the part that is relevant to your reply or summarize it in the body of your post. Always remember that your responses to questions or inquiries are posted to all members on the listserv. Therefore you should respond in an appropriate manner.
Be sure you offer content in whatever you post to the entire list. Avoid posting "Me Too" messages, that is, short replies to the whole list just to say you agree or had a similar reaction or experience. It is better to send these by private mail to the original writer.
Content & Subject
Make sure you label the content of your post in the subject line. If you are changing topics, update the subject line to match your new topic. This will make it easier for readers searching for answers on a specific topic to locate needed information.
Commercial announcements are not allowed. However, you are welcome to share information about upcoming workshops or informational materials related to FASD that you think others on the listserv will find useful.
Use emoticons and abbreviations to show emotion and cut down on length.
Do not send attachments (our software will remove them). Any attachments should be sent to the person requesting them off list.
Stay on Topic
The purpose of this listserv is to provide information and support for issues related to FASD. Avoid irrelevant messages. If you have a joke or recipe that seems to fit a certain posting -send it directly to that person rather than the whole list. Don't send virus warnings, other people's inspirational poetry or chain letters.
No Flaming, Spamming or Harvesting of any members - for any reason.
Violators of these guidelines will be removed from the list.
The development of the Stone Soup Group Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Parent listserv is supported by a grant from the State of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services with funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Grant #5 UDI SP09198-03.
